As we all know, traffic on Highway 29 and especially Silverado Trail seems to have increased exponentially in the last 15 months. Even prior to that, many up valley residents and business people had expressed a concern to me about the increasing number of events that require closure of Silverado Trail on weekends.
A discussion about this issue is agendized for tomorrow at the Board of Supervisors’ meeting, adjunct to a request to close Silverado Trail on Sunday, April 19. There is no set time for the matter; it will probably be heard between 10 a.m. and noon (and closer to 10 a.m.).
The issue is not about events like the Napa Valley Marathon, but all the new events requiring road closures that have been initiated in the last 5-10 years. Many believe that these new events are capitalizing on the Napa name – but are contributing little (if anything) to either local charities or the local economy; in other words, the event participants come in for the day to have fun and the event promoters reap income, but local businesses and residents suffer the negative effects.
